來自美國國家航空航天局（ NASA ）等機構的最新資料顯示，最近的火星圖像一改人們心目中那個「紅色星球」的形象，有時看起來更像是美味的奶油巧克力。
CNN 報導， NASA 以及歐洲航天局（ European Space Agency ，簡稱為 ESA ）和俄羅斯聯邦航天局（ Roscosmos ）合作的火星微量氣體追蹤軌道飛行器（ ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter ）於本週拍攝到的照片上均顯現，火星似乎變成了大大的、誘人的奶油餅乾。
北極的冬天導使二氧化碳結成薄薄的冰層，覆蓋了沙丘。當春季到來的時候，這層冰會立即轉變為水蒸氣，沙丘也從其底部開始，向上除霜。

New images show Mars as you've never seen it before
在結冰時，氣體會被鎖定在冰層和沙子之間的空隙中。當冰解凍時，氣體會從裂縫中噴出，不可避免地會有沙子露出。於是就出現了酷似奶油餅乾的圖案，而且還有巧克力餅乾。

美國國家航天航空局 NASA 的火星偵察軌道飛行器還從丹尼爾森火山口（ Danielson Crater ）拍攝了一張圖像，該地點位於火星西南部 42 英里（ 68 公里）處。
在火山口中，圖像的細節中顯示出粘結在一起的岩石和沙子被凍結鎖定。這些年來，火山口中的沉積物數量有所變化。一些地區表現出較強的抵侵蝕能力，而其它地區的沉積物看上去則很容易被清除。 NASA 認為，這就是階梯狀突起層形成的原因。
